The Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo take precautionary measures against Coronavirus

Afrinpost – Special

In the context of preventive measures against the deadly Corona virus, the residents of Sheikh Maksoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods (known to be predominantly Kurdish, in addition to the rest of the Syrian components), closed all shops and markets, while they were protected by the Asayish forces in Aleppo.

In order to avoid gatherings and prevent the spread of the deadly Coronavirus in the region, the residents of the “Sheikh Maksoud” neighborhood in the western and eastern part of Maarouf and Ashrafieh closed all shops.

Only some grocery stores, vegetable stores, ovens and bakeries that are essential to the lives of the people, were opened while the management of those neighborhoods is keen to prevent gathering in any of them.

In the same context, the “municipalities of the people” in these neighborhoods have come out with patrols between open stores to control prices and prevent opportunities for exploitation by merchants, while all crossings between those neighborhoods and areas under the control of the Syrian regime have been closed, as have all schools and public parks closed.

The measures met with the approval of the people, and the commitment of the majority of them, as the streets are clear of the residents, and the response by the people is estimated at 80%, while these measures are to be implemented until further notice.

On the nineteenth of March, a number of self-management institutions in Al-Shahba had issued a statement regarding the health risks that the spread of the Coronavirus could create, and mentioned the needs they lack in order to cope with any possible spread of the virus.

It included various respiratory and medical equipments, and said that this appeal is in the name of the displaced Afrin in Al-Shahba (northern Aleppo countryside) and was prepared by the Kurdish Red Crescent, in coordination and support: – Democratic Self-Administration in Al-Shahba – Camp Administration in Al-Shahba – Administration of Afrin Hospital – Health Authority in Al-Shahba – Human rights in Al-Shahba – The Kurdish Red Crescent in Al-Shahba.
