Pro-Turkey Militants Assault Elderly Kurd in Retaliation for Filing Complaint, in Afrin

On May 30th, members of the security faction within the Turkish-affiliated Sultan Murad militia, led by Faysal Abu Adi, physically assaulted elderly citizen Zaki Sheikh Naasan (70 years old) from the village of Qastal Kishk in the central district. The attack was a result of his decision to file a complaint with the local council in the town of Sharan.

Approximately six shepherds from the Al-Ali family, belonging to the Al-Ajil clan, had been grazing their livestock in the midst of Kurdish villagers’ fields in the villages of Qastal Kishk and Qarah Tabah. They colluded with the Sultan Murad militia. When citizen Zaki lodged a complaint against them, militia members assaulted him, causing varying injuries to his head and body. They also attempted to raid his house with the intention of attacking his son, who happened to be absent at the time.

The Human Rights Organization in Afrin stated that the security leader, Faysal Abu Adi, threatens Kurdish farmers with physical assault and imprisonment if they file complaints against the perpetrators, aside from collaborating with Turkish intelligence and accusing them of cooperating with the former Autonomous Administration in Afrin.

Acts of aggression against elderly Kurds, along with the looting of their money and belongings by Ankara-backed militia fighters, continue to occur amidst the prevailing security vacuum, absence of law and accountability, and the armed militants’ exploitation of their weaponry against defenseless Kurds.

On the night of May 6th, an armed and masked group brutally assaulted an elderly Kurdish couple from the village of Kareh/Saghir in the Hulbul sub-district, violently beating them and stealing their savings.

The armed group forcefully entered the home of citizen Fawzi Khalil Habash (known as Abu Salam), 70 years old, in the village of Kareh, beating him with the butt of their weapons. They then imprisoned him and his deaf wife in a room, threatening them not to make any noise. The group proceeded to rob them of $400, 1500 Turkish liras, two mobile phones, and three gas cylinders
