Ongoing Illegal Logging of Olive Trees in Afrin

afrinpost-Exclusive

Our correspondent in Afrin reports that on the evening of April 30, 2024, a Turkish-backed militia cut down 25 olive trees belonging to citizen Rashid Omar in a field near the irrigation canal adjacent to the Trafik Road, east of Afrin city.

Additionally, on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, the militia known as “Sultan Malak Shah Brigade,” led by Mahmoud Al-Baz, partially cut down 15 olive trees and 40 others in the Sharan sub-district. These trees were owned by citizen Khalil Hesso from the village of Sinka.

These actions, purportedly for harvesting and financial gain, occurred under the supervision of Turkish intelligence and officials. Since the beginning of the occupation of Afrin, Turkish authorities have reportedly enabled militias and their affiliates to seize the properties of locals and disrupt their livelihoods, coercing them into displacement to serve demographic changes in the region.
