A German parliamentary report revealed that Turkey is carrying out a military occupation in Syria, where it launched an attack targeting the Syrian Democratic Forces in the northeast of the country.
According to Deutsche Welle newspaper on Sunday, citing the German news agency that the report issued by the research department in the German Bundestag describes Turkey as an occupying force in Syria.
The report said: “The presence of Turkish forces in Afrin, Aziz, Bab and Jarablus as a whole meets the standards of military occupation when it is examined in accordance with international law.”
The nine-page analysis, prepared at the initiative of the German Left Party, follows a report in May that raised questions about the legality of Turkey’s 2018 military operation in Afrin, Syria, which was a local autonomy within the country’s autonomous system.
The left-wing MP, Sevim Daedlin: “The failure to evaluate Turkey’s attack and occupation in Syria as a violation of international law despite all the reports of experts and the position of all parties with a group in the German parliament is a scandal.”
The reports by the Bundestag research service are aimed at briefing lawmakers on issues that require expertise and do not reflect the views of the German parliament.
The most important question remains, since Europe is mostly a media opponent of the Turkish invasion and occupation of northern Syria, why is the European response limited to verbal rejection without taking any action that might deter the Turkish occupation from taking the path of its Ottoman expansionist dreams?
