Kurdish civilian Ahmed Hesso was killed, and his wife, Harbiya Jendo, was injured after being shot by Turkish-backed Islamic militias while attempting to leave Tel Rifaat prior to the militants’ takeover of the city.
Hesso was from the Yazidi village of Qibar near Afrin, while his wife, Harbiya, hails from Qastal Jendo village in the Shara sub-district of Afrin.
This marks the second such killing recently. Yazidi civilian Mamdouh Bakr Othman was fatally shot three times last Friday in Aleppo. According to his family, who received his body on Monday, the gunshots were fatal. Mamdouh was originally from the Yazidi village of Qatma in occupied Afrin.
These incidents coincide with inflammatory remarks by Zahir Al-Saket, a defected brigadier now residing in Belgium. In a public call on social media, he urged factions of the Syrian National Army and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham controlling Aleppo and its countryside to “slaughter Kurds behind the screens,” encouraging violence without public acknowledgment.
