Our reporter in Afrin revealed that properties owned by Kurds residing in Lebanon, Aleppo, Shahba in northern Aleppo, Syrian regime-controlled areas, and regions controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been declared as property of the Syrian National Army (SNA).
According to a local source, a lawyer representing the joint forces (the Hamza Division and the Sultan Suleiman Shah Division) and the SNA stated that these properties are now under SNA control and that relatives of the original Kurdish owners, regardless of their degree of kinship, have no right to claim them if they are residing in Afrin.
This declaration was made during a meeting held on May 12, 2024, at the home of the village head of Haj Khalil in Rajo. The meeting was called by Captain Hazem Al-Marei, the sector chief of Rajo for the Hamza Division, and was attended by his brother, Colonel Hashem Al-Marei. The village heads from areas under Hamza Division control were also present and informed of this new directive.
It is noted that year after year, the Syrian National Army has been implementing additional measures to inventory and seize the properties of Afrin residents, aiming to expropriate more lands or impose higher levies on them. This policy is reportedly directed by Turkish intelligence as part of a systematic hostile strategy against the Kurdish population.
