The European Union could face a wave of ISIS fighters returning from Syria after fleeing by the fighting unless it adopts firm policy with Turkey to halt, among other measures, any EU accession talks or trade talks with Ankara, a Kurdish leader told Reuters.
US President Donald Trump’s announcement in early October paved the way for US troops from northeastern Syria to pave the way for a Turkish offensive against the YPG, which stood on the the frontline against ISIS.
Ilham Ahmed, a Kurdish politician from Afrin, head of the executive committee of the Syrian Democratic Council, said in an interview that the EU should be firmer with Turkey or it would soon face a wave of ISIS militants arriving in Europe.
“The danger is very high because of the indiscriminate manner in which the United States withdrew. This allowed many ISIS operatives to flee and will return to their countries to continue their terrorist activities, ”she said.“ This poses a major threat to Britain and Europe in general. ”
Ilham Ahmed called on Europe to send 2,000 troops to secure the Syrian-Turkish border, to prevent ISIS fighters from crossing and stop all arms sales to Turkey. “Our people are being killed by European weapons,” she said.
“The candidate for EU membership is not the same Turkey that you think you know. It is now a fundamentalist Islamic state, and you in Europe should be aware of that, ”she said, adding that the EU should suspend its accession talks and cancel any trade agreements with it.
“Turkey needs to be scared and it is not now,” she said.
