Border Guard Militia Releases Three Detainees After Extortion in Afrin

afrinpost-exclusive

Our correspondent reported that the Turkish-backed “Border Guard” militia released three individuals yesterday after extorting substantial sums of money from their families.

The released individuals include:

Khalil Suleiman Jamo, 46, from the village of Brad in Sherawa, Afrin, who was freed after paying a $2,000 ransom.

Mohammed Salim Al-Hussein, 45, and Mohammed Hussein Al-Hussein, 40, both from Al-Zirba in western Aleppo countryside, each released after paying $500.

The three had been detained on November 2, 2024, while attempting to cross into Turkish territory through the Bulbul sub-district in Afrin, facilitated by smugglers.

This incident underscores the ongoing exploitation of migrants by armed groups in Afrin, where forced detentions and financial extortion have become common practices under the guise of border control.
