Militias Exploit Post-Fire Forests in Afrin for Timber and Charcoal Trade

afrinpost-exclusive

Our sources in Afrin report that following the extensive wildfires that ravaged the forests of Mount Hawar, located between the Bulbul and Rajo sub-districts in Afrin, during the months of June, July, and August, the destruction of approximately 2,000 hectares (50% of the forested area) has led to increased deforestation activities by the “Syrian National Army” militias.

These militias are now actively cutting down the remaining forest trees, collecting charred wood remnants, and uprooting buried tree stumps using heavy machinery to produce charcoal. The harvested timber and charcoal are being transported via large trucks to Idlib province, where they are sold for around $100 per ton.
