In a series of recent developments in Afrin, Turkish-backed militias have continued their crackdown on local residents. Last night, a patrol from the “Military Police” detained two individuals, Mohammad Ismail (22) from Ghazawiya and Jwan Suleiman (23) from Jindires. The arrest occurred on AL-Vellat road in Afrin, following a routine check for identification. The reasons behind their detention remain unclear.
In a separate incident, the “Sultan Murad Brigade” released Abdul Rahman Rasul, who had been held for twenty days. Rasul, a resident of Al-Zaidiya neighborhood, was detained after demanding the return of his seized home. To secure his release, he was forced to pay a ransom of $2,000 and commit to renting a residence for the IDP occupying his property, covering six months’ rent in advance.
Furthermore, the “Military Police” released Jwan Hamid Hamid, a resident of Okkan in the Bulbul sub-district, today after a detention of approximately 19 days. Hamid’s release came after he paid a ransom of $4,000, highlighting ongoing issues with arbitrary detention and extortion by local militias.
These incidents underscore the escalating tension and instability in the region, reflecting broader concerns about the treatment of civilians under the current military and administrative control.
