Turkish-Backed Militias Tighten Security in Afrin Following Recent Unrest

Our correspondent in Afrin city reports that the “Sultan Suleiman Shah Brigade – Al-Amshat” militia, specifically tasked by Turkish intelligence, has been assigned to protect two key buildings in Afrin: the old Saray building, which now serves as the headquarters for the Turkish governor, and the Turkish Post (PTT) building, previously the telecommunications office. This move follows the unrest in Afrin on July 1st.

The report states that Al-Amshat has deployed twenty guards, mostly Turkmen, to secure the Saray building, including positioning snipers on the rooftop. Additionally, the “Abu Haidar” group, affiliated with Al-Amshat, has been tasked with guarding the Turkish Post building.

Due to the absence of Turkish staff since the unrest, salaries for education and police personnel have been delayed. Furthermore, Turkey has deducted 30% from the salaries of “Syrian National Army” militia members, which range between 1,500 and 2,000 Turkish Lira, to compensate for the damages to its equipment during the protests and clashes in northern Syria.
