Extensive Theft of Public Electricity Infrastructure in Afrin

afrinpost – Exclusive

Our correspondent reports that a group from the “Sultan Murad Division” militia, in prior agreement with the Turkish electricity company operating in Afrin, has been dismantling wooden poles of the public electricity network around the Midanki Dam. These poles are then sold to the company at $50 each, while the company resells them to citizens at $150 per pole.

In a related incident, IDP affiliated with the “Sultan Murad Division” have been attempting to steal cables from the public electricity network near Al-Mahmudiya neighborhood in Afrin city. One of the IDPs, Faisal Hassan Abu al-Qasim, a Turkmen from the Hulluk neighborhood in Aleppo, died from an electric shock while cutting the cables.

It is noteworthy that most villages in Afrin’s countryside have been deprived of public electricity due to the militia’s systematic theft of all components of the public network, particularly following the invasion of the region in March 2018.
