Arbitrary Arrests and Extortion by Militias in Afrin

Our correspondent reports that the “Military Police in Afrin” arrested Jiwan Hamid, 42, from the village of Awka in the Bulbul sub-district, four days ago near Bilal Mosque in Al-Ashrafieh neighborhood of Afrin city.

According to the correspondent, Hamid was accused of collaborating with the Autonomous Administration and is currently held in arbitrary detention at the former Asayish building in Al-Mahmoudiya forest. The “Military Police” are demanding a ransom of $5,000 for his release.

In a separate incident, the “Hamza Division” militia released an IDP, Jumaa al-Mousa (Abu Saleh), 60, from the village of Tal Daman in southern Aleppo. Al-Mousa, who resides in the village of Kokan in the Mobata/Ma’batli sub-district, had been detained for approximately 15 days. The militia imposed a ransom of $2,000 and five sheep for his release and the return of his vehicle.
