Sources reported to “afrinpost” that the Kurdish youth Ismail Mohammed Zaki Ali, who is from Gamrok village of occupied Afrin, was apprehended on November 17th, 2023, by Military Police militia members at a checkpoint in the occupied city of Jarabulus. He was detained on charges of mandatory military service in the city of Afrin, while returning from Aleppo province to attend to his parents.

The sources added that the family of the young man was demanded a sum of 15,000 Turkish liras for his release by the Military Police militia. This was justified as funds to be paid to the judiciary as a bribe for his release. However, after the militia received the mentioned amount, they handed him over to Al-Jabha Al-Shamiya militia, who in turn demanded $6,000 USD from his family for his release.

Despite the family’s payment of the ransom, Al-Jabha Al-Shamiya militia returned the young man to the Military Police militia in kafr Jannah village in the Shara district, alleging that he was wanted by them for charges related to mandatory military service and carrying arms during the occupation of Afrin.

A source within the family, who chose to remain anonymous for security reasons, expressed concern about the unknown fate of Ismail. The father is in a distraught state, fearing for his son’s well-being, especially after the Military Police militia refused to allow him to visit Ismail in Kafr Jannah prison. While his family is apprehensive that Ismail might be subjected to torture to coerce a confession related to armed resistance against the Turkish occupation.
