Militias Extort Families for Ransom Amid Turkish Authorities’ Security Failures in Afrin

afrinpost-Exclusive

Ankara-affiliated militias in Afrin have turned to kidnapping, exploiting the desperation of families by demanding hefty ransoms under threats of harm. Security forces under the Turkish authority have failed to effectively counter these operations in the occupied region of Afrin.

Our correspondent reported that, approximately five days ago, the Turkish-backed “Al-Hamza/Hamzat Brigade” militia kidnapped Mohammad Mustafa Muslim, born in 1989 and a resident of Jwaiq village. The militia is demanding a ransom of five thousand dollars from his family, threatening to fabricate charges against him and transfer him to the notorious Al-Raa’i Prison if the requested amount is not paid.

This incident adds to a concerning total of 448 documented cases of arrests and kidnappings in 2023.
