A powerful explosion rocked a warehouse containing explosive materials amidst residential buildings near Marateh Roundabout in the occupied city of Afrin today, September 16th. The explosion resulted in the death and injury of dozens of IDPs.
According to our correspondent, the explosion took place in a seized house that had been converted by the “Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham” militia into a storage facility for preparing explosive materials and improvised explosive devices. The blast claimed the lives of six individuals, including two children, one of whom was a member of the “Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham” militia. Additionally, more than eight people, including women, were injured, according to initial reports. They belong to the IDP families residing in the residential building where the explosion occurred.
Among the injured, “Abu Muhammad Ahrar,” hailing from Aleppo, was identified, along with “Noura al-Bayek” and “Halima Ayyash al-Latif,” some of them suffering severe injuries, with the possibility of an increase in the casualty count.
The explosion also caused extensive damage to the residential building and adjacent structures, as well as the facades of nearby commercial establishments.
According to the available information, the house was seized by an armed individual affiliated with the “Ahrar al-Sham” militia named “Abu Muhammad Ahrar.” He is an expert in booby traps and explosives and had been using the house for the manufacturing of explosive devices.
