Afrin Military Police Arrests Citizen on Alleged Espionage Charges, Demands Ransom

In a recent development, our correspondent reported the arrest of an individual named Mohammed Al-Ahmad bin Jameel, a 33-year-old resident of Aleppo, by the military police militia in Afrin on May 19. He has been charged with espionage for the Syrian government.

Our correspondent further revealed that the militia imposed a hefty ransom of five thousand dollars for the release of Mohammed Al-Ahmad. He is known to be engaged in the tire trade and is considered to be financially well-off.

The victims of these incidents were predominantly local residents of Afrin, including a minor girl. Additionally, the report highlights six documented cases of releases.

Arrest operations are often carried out arbitrarily, either through checkpoints where civilians are detained or through violent raids accompanied by meticulous house searches and humiliation of the inhabitants. The charges against the detained individuals mostly revolve around their previous association with the former Autonomous Administration or alleged collaboration with Kurdish military entities.
