Continued Arbitrary Arrests by Turkish-Backed Militias in Afrin

afrinpost-exclusive

Our reporters in Afrin indicate an alarming escalation in arbitrary arrests conducted by the Turkish-backed Military Police militia across Afrin and surrounding areas.

On Tuesday, the militia detained Mohammed Jumaa (41), a resident of Jindires, without providing any justification for the arrest.

The following day, they arrested Ali Abdulrahman Mustafa (45), also from Jindires, only five days after he returned from displacement. He was accused of prior ties to the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

Similarly, Abdu Faiq (32), a resident of Kafrshil village, was detained at a “Military Police” checkpoint in Qatma village (Sharan sub-district) while returning to Afrin from the Shahba region in northern Aleppo.

In a separate incident two weeks ago, Mohammed Ahmed Hassan (32) from Chaqala village (Rajo sub-district) was arrested in Jarabulus and remains in custody under arbitrary detention.

These arrests are part of a broader pattern of violations by Turkish-backed militias, often targeting individuals under baseless accusations such as alleged affiliations with the previous Autonomous Administration. Detainees frequently face extortion, abuse, and mistreatment, further exacerbating the plight of Afrin’s Kurdish residents.
