Our correspondent reported that Turkish intelligence recently separated a detained Kurdish couple, Jawdat Kanjo Kanjo (35) and Jihan Bakr Alo (30), both from the town of Jalameh in Jindires. The husband was transferred to a prison in Azaz, while the wife was taken to the infamous Al-Rai prison in Al-Bab.
The couple was arrested on October 2, 2024, by a military police checkpoint near Qatmah village in Sharan sub-district, Afrin, upon orders from Turkish intelligence. They were reportedly not involved in any criminal activity or listed as wanted individuals. However, Jihan’s father, lawyer Bakr Alo, is employed by the Autonomous Administration in the Shahba region of northern Aleppo, which appears to have been the justification for their arrest.
The couple had returned to their village after their wedding in Aleppo, fearing that Faylaq Al-Sham militia would confiscate their home and property. Despite their attempt to secure their belongings, they were detained en route.
Their families now fear prolonged detention without a fair trial. Hundreds of Kurdish detainees remain forcibly disappeared or held without charges in Al-Rai prison, which is under the control of the Sultan Murad Division and directly supervised by Turkish intelligence. Prisoners in this facility are often denied legal recourse and any connection to the outside world, raising serious concerns about their welfare and rights.
