Continued Arrest Campaign by Turkish Forces in Afrin Villages

The Turkish forces in Afrin persist in their campaign of arrests in the villages of Gulyan Fawqani and Tahtani, which began at the end of December 2023, resulting in the detention of citizens from both villages. The number of detainees has now risen to 14, including 4 women.

On February 11th, Turkish intelligence, in coordination with the allied Military Police in the Rajo district, detained Sabri Mohammed Hammoush (55 years old) from the village of Gulyan Tahtani, and Abdou Azat Rashid (40 years old) from the village of Gulyan Tahtani.

The detained persons were accused of having previous ties with the Autonomous Administration and remain arbitrarily detained, according to the weekly documentation report issued by the Kurdish Democratic Unity Party on February 17th, 2024.

On February 9th, the Military Police – Anti-Terrorism Unit in the occupied city of Azaz detained Rola Hamdo (40 years old) from the town of Rajo, who works with the Bahar Organization, on charges of having previous ties with the Autonomous Administration. She was released on February 12th, 2024, upon her arrival in Azaz for a visit.

The report mentioned that the fate of the Kurdish citizen Mohammed Mustafa Daru (30 years old) from the town of Badina remains unknown. He was arrested by Turkish intelligence, in coordination with the Military Police militia in the Rajo district, over a month ago on charges of having previous ties with the Autonomous Administration. He is still arbitrarily detained in the central prison of Afrin, located in the village of Marateh. Daru was arrested upon his return from Lebanon to Aleppo and then to Afrin to reunite with his family in the town.

afrinpost” documented 74 cases of arrest and abduction since the beginning of February 2024 until the 18th of the same month, including 4 women, a child, and 4 IDPs. Additionally, 5 cases involved citizens returning from Aleppo, 40 cases of abduction at the checkpoints of Shiite militias in the cities of Nubl and Zahraa, and 31 cases of release.
