Returning Kurds Face Challenges in Afrin Amidst Property Disputes

afrinpost-Exclusive

Returning Kurdish citizens to the region of Afrin are grappling with formidable challenges as they seek to reclaim homes, businesses, and agricultural lands seized by armed militants and incoming IDPs. These individuals demand hefty sums, or resort to fabricating charges, compelling the original owners to relinquish their properties or face unwarranted arrests.

In a related development, an IDP from the Qatni family, hailing from the town of Hayan, adamantly refuses to vacate two commercial properties within the occupied Afrin’s industrial zone. Moreover, he declines to pay rent to the legitimate owner, insisting on a payment of five thousand dollars under the pretext of having invested in improving the properties.

These contested properties originally belong to citizen Mohammed Khalil Abu Ziad from the village of Şadêrê/Shih al-Deir in the Sherawa district, who returned from Turkey approximately a month ago.

Our sources also reported on November 19th an incident involving citizen Haider Musa from the village of Meydana in the Rajo district. Having returned from Aleppo a month ago, he sought to reclaim his residence. However, the occupying IDP not only refused evacuation but also demanded three thousand dollars, asserting he had expended this amount on house repairs following the earthquake on February 6, 2023. Notably, the Shafak Organization covered the associated repair costs.

It is crucial to highlight that on November 15th, the Turkish-backed military police militia detained Imad Hassan (49 years old) from the village of Khalnireh. Having returned a week earlier from Aleppo, Hassan demanded his house near Vin restaurant in occupied Afrin, a property currently seized by an affiliate of the ‘Sultan Murad’ militia.”
