Our correspondent in Afrin reported that Turkish-backed Civil Police militia arrested a forty-year-old citizen, Hayat Jameel Ajjo, approximately one month ago. Ajjo had returned to her village, Xidriya\ Khedirianli in the Bulbul sub-district, from the Shahba region.
Hayat endured a week in detention, securing her release around ten days ago, allegedly after paying a $500 ransom. Disturbingly, militia members subjected her son, Jameel Adam Youssef (22 years old), to physical assault, ostensibly in connection to an inquiry into his mother’s return to Afrin. Notably, Jameel has never left the city since it was occupied in 2018.
In a parallel incident, sources indicate that the Military Police militia in the Sharan sub-district has detained Rezan Mohammad Hesso (42 years old) for over a month. Hesso was apprehended upon returning from Aleppo to his village, Hasandera, and is currently held in the Sharan sub-district center.
These actions by Turkish-backed forces have sparked concerns, especially as Turkish intelligence treats citizens’ return as a security matter. Earlier in September 2022, village leaders were urged to play an organizational role in managing the return process.
