This week, German emergency doctor Dr. Akram Naasan lodged a criminal complaint against Turkish President Erdogan. The Kurdish community in Germany and the Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) endorsed and supported the complaint under sections 7 and 120 of the German Penal Code (VStGB) in conjunction with paragraph 12 of the Penal Code (StGB).
In his complaint, Dr. Naasan states that, on Erdogan’s orders, the Turkish army, in collaboration with allied Islamists, attacked his hometown of Afrin, violating international law in March 2018, subsequently occupying it. Thousands, including members of his family, were forced to flee, and hundreds lost their lives in this assault.
Dr. Naasan himself has faced hardship and misery, with Turkish forces and mercenaries seizing his home and lands in Afrin. The gravesite of his mother and the village cemetery were desecrated. He is now engaged with the German judicial system and the Federal Prosecutor General.
Dr. Akram Naasan has been residing in Germany since 1974 and continues to work as a doctor with Internationale Nothilfe e.V, having been deployed to various crisis regions, including Bosnia, Kosovo, Angola, Gaza, the West Bank, Sri Lanka, Georgia, Armenia, Iraq, Syria, and Kurdish regions in Turkey.
The Middle East expert at the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP), Dr. Kamal Sido, stated urgently, “We call on the federal prosecutor to issue an arrest warrant against the suspected war criminal Erdogan. He is guilty of violating international law in at least two cases: the 2018 attack on the Syrian Kurdish region of Afrin and the subsequent invasion of the Syrian Kurdish region of Ras al-Ain the following year. In both cases, Erdogan’s army committed countless war crimes on his behalf.”
Dr. Sido emphasized, “Peter Frank must act because the people in Afrin have been suffering from brutal occupation since 2018. This occupation not only seeks to destroy the people but also aims to obliterate their culture, language, history, and religion. Through aggressive Islamization, Erdogan attempts to transform Sunni Kurdish Muslims in Afrin into radical Islamists who harbor hatred towards neighbors of different religions.
