Darat Azza Witnesses Mass Exodus as Syrian Regime Launches Intense Shelling

Since this Friday morning, October 6, 2023, the city of Darat Azza in western Aleppo countryside has experienced a significant movement of residents heading towards the occupied city of Afrin. This displacement is driven by fears of renewed artillery bombardment on the city by the Syrian regime’s army.

According to our correspondent in Aleppo’s countryside, the Syrian regime’s army launched a fierce artillery and missile shelling campaign earlier today, which is described as the most intense in months. The targeted areas include Jisr al-Shughour, Benin, Fatira, Ma’arabla, Hambooshia, Deir Sunbul, Al-Rweihah, Al-Bara, San, Al-Nayrab, Afes, Mozerah, Sarmin, Maaratbaia, Ma’arzaf, Majdalayya in Idlib province, as well as Kafr Lata in Idlib’s western countryside. This offensive comes alongside heavy Russian reconnaissance aircraft activity in the region.

This renewed shelling follows an incident in Homs yesterday, Thursday, where unmanned aerial vehicles conducted an airstrike near Al-Razi Hospital and the military hospital. Additionally, approximately 9 civilians were injured as a drone targeted the Al-Ghouta neighborhood in Homs with a rocket.

Unknown drones targeted the graduation ceremony of officers at the military college moments after the ceremony concluded in Homs province. This attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 90 people, including civilians related to the officers. Moreover, around 120 officers and their relatives waiting at the entrance of the “Military College” were wounded. Notably, the graduation ceremony was attended by senior Syrian regime military leaders and the Minister of Defense. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported these events, while the Syrian Ministry of Defense accused “terrorist groups” of carrying out the attack on the Military College in Homs.
