Turkish authorities in the occupied city of Afrin have detained a Kurdish resident, Mr. Suleiman Abdul Rahman Mohammed, aged 35. The arrest took place on October 11th at his residence near the Al-Shawak Mosque in the Old Town of Afrin.
Suleiman Mohammed, originally from the town of Sharan in the Afrin region, had returned to Afrin from Aleppo about 20 days before his arrest. Turkish authorities have been systematically targeting Kurdish residents returning to their hometowns after years of displacement, subjecting them to harassment and intimidation to deter them from reclaiming their confiscated properties.
This incident is part of an alarming pattern of arrests carried out by Turkish authorities in Afrin, which have intensified in recent weeks. The Turkish forces have apprehended Kurdish residents upon their return from various locations, including Aleppo, as part of a campaign aimed at suppressing the Kurdish presence in the region.
The detention of Mr. Suleiman Mohammed follows the arrest of another Kurdish resident, Mr. Muhammad Ramzi Kelo, aged 30, who was taken into custody on October 9th, barely a few days before Suleiman’s arrest. Muhammad Kilo, originally from the village of Surkiyeh in the Rajo sub-district, was detained in his home upon his return from Aleppo and remains incarcerated in Marateh Central Prison in occupied Afrin.
Furthermore, on October 5th, the Turkish authorities arrested Mr. Ahmed Hussein Hassan, a resident of the village of Hajilar in the Jindires sub-district, in the Al-Ashrafiyah neighborhood of occupied Afrin. He was apprehended upon his return from Lebanon approximately twenty days prior to his arrest.
