Arbitrary Arrests by Turkish-backed Militia in Afrin

afrinpost-Exclusive

On October 1, our reporter in Afrin learned that “Mohammed Suleiman Dadu,” a 39-year-old resident of the village of Uga in the Bulbul sub-district, was arrested about a week ago upon his return from the Shahba region in northern Aleppo countryside. The charges against him remain undisclosed, and he continues to be held in detention.

This arrest is part of a concerning trend that afrinpost has been monitoring closely. During September 2023, a total of 44 cases of arrest and abduction were documented, 7 of them were women, including three who were apprehended with their children. These cases include the arrest of 10 citizens who had recently returned to Afrin, as well as one arrest that took place on Turkish territory. Additionally, four cases of release were documented, and these arrests even targeted 7 IDPs.

The arrest operations are marked by their arbitrary nature, often involving the detention of citizens at security checkpoints. Violent raids on homes, accompanied by thorough searches and the humiliation of homeowners, have also become common. The charges brought against the detainees tend to be vague, with many cases revolving around alleged connections to the former Autonomous Administration or supposed collaboration with Kurdish military entities.
