Afrin Residents Resist Militias’ Attempt to Impose Olive Harvest Taxes

afrinpost-Exclusive

Exclusive sources reported to afrinpost that the economic bureau of militias associated with the “Hamza Brigade” and “Suleiman Shah” held a meeting on October 3rd with the inhabitants of the villages of Kukan Fauqani and Kukan Tahtani in the Mobata sub-district of occupied Afrin. Village elders were also present at the gathering, where they were urged to issue land ownership certificates, with the apparent aim of imposing financial levies on olive field owners.

According to the source, the “Hamza Brigade” and “Suleiman Shah” militias demanded two Turkish liras for each olive tree in both villages under the pretext of protecting the current season’s harvest from theft. Simultaneously, their members and affiliated IDPs engaged in the theft and harvesting of olives, as well as grazing their sheep within the olive fields.

The issuance of land ownership certificates has sparked widespread resentment among the local residents, who express their anger at the oppressive decisions imposed by the “Hamza Brigade” and “Suleiman Shah” militias.

It’s worth noting that since the beginning of September 2023, the economic bureaus of Turkish-affiliated militias have been requesting ownership statements from Kurdish citizens with the intention of imposing levies on the upcoming olive season. Among the known measures is their imposition of a 20% tax on widows’ properties among the residents of the Rajo sub-district.
