The Turkish authorities released Mr. Masoud Ismail Mendo, from the village of Zivingê in the Bulbul district, on June 18th. His release came after he paid a fine of $400.
Mr. Masoud Ismail, aged 42 and belonging to the Mendo family, was detained by Turkish intelligence forces on May 10th, 2023. He was apprehended from his residence located in the Old Afrin neighborhood of the occupied city of Afrin.
According to exclusive sources, Mr. Masoud had recently been advocating for the reclaiming of his own house and his father’s house, both of which were seized by the “Sultan Murad” militia. Additionally, he sought to recover local family-owned shops situated in the city’s market. It is suspected that the Turkish-affiliated militias fabricated charges against him, leading to his arrest in an attempt to silence his demands for the restitution of his and his father’s properties.
The release of Mr. Masoud Ismail Mendo raises questions about the situation of property rights and the rule of law in the occupied region of Afrin. The ongoing struggles faced by residents in reclaiming their confiscated properties remain a cause for concern, highlighting the broader issue of accountability and justice within the Turkish-occupied territories.
