Kurds in Afrin Face Continuous Attacks and Exploitation by Turkish-backed Militias

afrinpost– Exclusive

The occupied region of Afrin continues to witness a series of distressing events as Kurds endure assault, oppression, and violations at the hands of armed militias and IDP families, operating under the guidance of Turkish occupation forces. These groups persistently target the indigenous population with the clear objective of altering the demographics and eradicating the Kurdish identity within the area.

In a distressing incident, the Turkish-backed Sultan Murad militia seized the house of Kurdish citizen Habib Ali located in Al-Bubna neighborhood of Afrin city, forcing him out and leaving him homeless. Since then, Habib has been residing on the streets, relying on the generosity of passersby for food and small amounts of money.

Our correspondent revealed that the militia members not only stripped him of his home but also robbed him of any money received from charitable individuals at the end of each day.

In a similar incident, sources had reported that Kurdish citizen Samir Sulaiman finds himself displaced, living on the streets near the Newroz roundabout on the Rajo road after IDPs, loyal to Turkey, took over his house located near the Sheikh Khalil Mosque in occupied Afrin city.

A video shared by an activist on social media captured Samir’s plight. He used to reside with his family in Turkey, but Turkish authorities deported him to northern Syria just before Eid al-Fitr. While his family remained in Turkey, Samir returned to Afrin, only to find two families of IDPs from Ghouta occupying his house. They informed him that they paid $1,700 to the person who previously lived there.

Samir remained homeless for over a month until a neighbor kindly offered him a trailer to live in, but he still hasn’t been able to reclaim his house or afford a tent for shelter or personal expenses.

Back on December 20, 2022, pages affiliated with the “National Army” militia circulated photos showing a young citizen named Arif Shakir Sulaiman (15 years old) sleeping on the pavement. This followed a brutal assault by IDPs who viciously attacked him while he was heading to his parents’ seized house in the Zaydiyah neighborhood of occupied Afrin city. Prior to the incident, Arif had been deported from Istanbul by Turkish authorities about ten days earlier, adding to his already dire circumstances.
