On Friday, February 24th, two militants belonging to one of the Turkish-backed factions were killed while attempting to kidnap a Kurdish citizen and his wife near the village of Naza in the Bulbul sub-district in Afrin.
According to reports, an armed group intercepted the elderly citizen Rashid Maamo (Rashidi Jarko) and his wife Sanaa while they were traveling in their car towards the city of Afrin near the quarry of Hasan-Dera village. The militants proceeded to gag and tie them up before abducting them using a van driven by one of the kidnappers.
However, suspicions were raised when the kidnappers failed to stop at a security checkpoint in the village of Hasan Dera, prompting a member of the checkpoint to pursue them. The pursuit led to a confrontation at a campsite in the vicinity of Naza village, resulting in the death of the two kidnappers and the rescue of the Kurdish couple.
Rashid is a resident of the village of Upulla in the Bulbul sub-district and owns an artistic mill in the village under the control of the “Al-Moutasem Brigade” militia. Sources suggest that the kidnappers were likely members of the same militia and were familiar with Rashid’s movements and financial situation.
It should be noted that Turkish-affiliated militias had previously abducted Rashid’s son, Muhammad Maamo, and released him only after a large ransom was paid.
