‘Qatari charitable organizations with a Muslim Brotherhood background have arrived in Afrin, where Turkish forces hold control, and have effectively contributed to settlement projects in forcibly occupied lands through humanitarian initiatives. Now, fears are renewing with the establishment of a settlement project on the ruins of the destroyed Kurdish city of Jindires.’
On Sunday, February 12th, the Qatar Charity Foundation announced the start of the implementation of the “City of Dignity” project to rebuild the areas affected by the earthquake in northern Syria.
The CEO of the foundation, Yusuf bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, stated in a tweet on the foundation’s account that he has been working on the humanitarian side for over 10 years, but has never witnessed such destruction in his life. He described the scene as heartbreaking and stated that it is his duty to participate and support the victims.
It should be noted that many organizations and societies with similar backgrounds have been present since the beginning of the Afrin occupation and have effectively contributed to building settlement projects that have rooted demographic change in the Kurdish region. Therefore, fears are serious that the Turkish authorities will exploit the earthquake disaster to establish a large settlement on the ruins of the destroyed city of Jindires.
In a related context, the Qatari director of international relief and development at the Red Crescent said that the major damage to the roads in northern Syria and the weather conditions are complicating relief efforts. He added that they will soon prepare a camp for the internally displaced people, but the process will be slow due to the difficult circumstances.
