Pro-Ankara militants logged 120 olive trees in Aljia, Afrin

afrinpost – Exclusive

Our reporter in Afrin stated today that gunmen uprooted 35 olive trees in the village of Aljia in Shara/Sharran district, and logged about 75 other trees from a field owned by the Kurdish civilian Hannan Sheikh Muhammad, located on the banks of Lake Midanki.

In a related context, a video was circulated on the TikTok application showing two armed men cutting down an old olive tree, then celebrating the fall of the tree with some IDPs. Where the estimated age of the tree is several centuries.

The uprooting and logging of perennial trees is not only aimed at obtaining firewood, but also at the abolition of a heritage value in occupied Afrin, as those trees were a witness to several successive generations, and this is being done in parallel with the uprooting of rare trees such as forest oaks, birch, oaks, and arbutus, to change the environmental and natural identity of the occupied territory.
