In the occupied city of Afrin, even cemeteries are not spared the attacks of the Turkish-backed militias, who deliberately violate their sanctity and sabotage, demolish and destroy the tombs in many villages.
On Sunday morning, 07/31/2022, gunmen from the Turkish-backed “Al-Hamzat” militia togather with IDPs attacked the cemeteries of a village of Dargire in Mobata district, violating its sanctity, and smashing tombstones.
Noting that the village has been under the control of “Al-Hamzat” militia since its occupation in 2018, and the group controlling the village is led by the mercenary called “Abu Inad Al-Mawali.”
Incidents of attacks on cemeteries in occupied Afrin have become a general phenomenon repeated in many villages. Religious shrines were also excavated and exhumed in search of archaeological finds.
The targeting was in particular of graves that have shrines written in the Kurdish language, or that belong to national Kurdish personalities. Also, in some cases, marble tombs are stolen.
It is noteworthy that a joint human rights report issued on 6/12/2021 said that the Turkish forces and the militias supported by them destroyed and desecrated graves and shrines in Afrin and converted some of them to livestock markets.
