Afrinpost – Asharq Al-Awsat
94 personalities from the Kurdish city of Afrin in northern Syria appealed to the Kurdish political forces in Syria to “overcome differences and transcend outstanding issues and make the case of Afrin central, uncompetitive or untradeable.”
The letter carried the signatures of academic personalities, writers, politicians, media and human rights activists, calling on all Kurdish parties to “take a firm stand and answer the direct question about fate, and find ways to end the occupation and put an end to the cruel suffering of the people of Afrin” as they represent the issue of the Kurdish people and negotiate in their name.
Academic and economic researcher Chalang Omar, one of the signatories of the appeal, said, “In front of the entitlement to the arrangement of the Kurdish house, all Kurdish forces and parties are demanding a serious attitude towards what the Afrin region is experiencing from the comprehensive and systematic campaign of extermination practiced by the Turkish occupation and its groups.”
In March of the year 2018, Ankara, accompanied by Muslim Brotherhood militias calling themselves the (Syrian National Army / Free Army), occupied the Kurdish region of Afrin and its countryside, which had been under the protection of Kurdish fighters since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, and since then international organizations and human rights organizations and international and media outlets have spoken about the deteriorating security situation and the deteriorating humanitarian and economic situation in this part of Syria, and Kurdish reports and sources have reported the displacement of half of its population.
The open call demanded that Afrin be a central issue due to its national dimension: “It is a direct and historical responsibility of the Kurds represented by parties, forces and personalities, and they are required to agree and arrange the internal house and heal the wound of Afrin, which is bleeding for more than two years.”
Academic Chalang Omar confirmed their support for the ongoing discussions and meetings between the Kurdish parties for the unity of the political class, and invited the participating parties to assume their responsibilities.
The call signatories also called on the international sponsoring parties to work “to end the Turkish occupation of the Afrin region and all cities and towns under its control in north and northwest of Syria, and to ensure a dignified return for the displaced and forcibly displaced, to disclose the fate of thousands of missing persons, to release all detainees, and to hold the perpetrators of violations and fair compensation to the families of the victims.” .
The Americans and the French intensified their meetings with the leaders of the Kurdish political groups in Syria to “unify the Kurdish ranks.”
