Afrinpost – Special
The city of Afrin has been witnessing a total cut of drinking water for about a month, after the Turkish occupation stopped supplying the power station of Midanky Dam, which was leased earlier in the Turkish city of Rihaniye.
The city’s water company, run by the occupation authorities, does not stop collecting the water bill of two thousand Syrian pounds a month, as the settlers evade paying it and collecting from the rest of the original Kurdish population only.
Water shortages have added to the living conditions of the city’s residents, exacerbating their financial situation. They have to pay for additional expenses by supplying drinking water through tanks, while buying ten barrels of water costs them 3,500 Syrian pounds, equivalent to at least 10,500 Syrian pounds per month, except for other financial burdens.
The people in Afrin in general and the city in particular, suffer from the continuing crisis of drinking water and its loss since the occupation of the Turkish army and Islamic militias in the province on the eighteenth of March.
The local occupation council is unable to solve the drinking water crisis, since no water has been pumped from Lake Medanky since the military occupation is systematic until the present time.
They were taken by the occupation forces as a starting point for their operations during the invasion of Afrin during the war called ” Olive branch ”.
Another reason is the fact that most of the service facilities and public institutions in Afrin were subjected to looting and theft by Islamic militias, many of which were out of service, especially high voltage lines, government wells, pumps, generators and machinery, as well as belongings belonging to citizens.
