Turkish-Affiliated Militias Arrest Recently Returning Kurds in Afrin

In a concerning development, the security checkpoint controlled by Turkish-backed militias detained Hannan Sheikh Fakhri at the entrance of western Afrin (Mahmoudiya checkpoint) on the morning of December 24. Hannan, returning from his village Gundi Sheikh to Afrin city, was taken to the city center without clear charges. Notably, Hannan had returned to the region approximately five months ago from Turkey.

Meanwhile, the number of detainees from Dargirê\Darkir village has increased to four individuals. On December 21, the military police militia arrested Abdo Arab, known as Abdo Mohamed (32 years old), four months after his return from Aleppo to his village.

On December 22, a military police patrol raided the village, arresting three villagers accused of working for Autonomous Administration institutions in Afrin. The detained individuals are Mustafa Mohamed Ahmed (24 years old), Bashar Mohamed (22 years old), and Sabri Shasho (65 years old).

In its report issued on December 23, The Kurdish Democratic Unity Party in Syria (Yekiti), highlighted the arbitrary arrest of a family of seven from Hekeche village, Jindires district, by the military police checkpoint at the entrance of Afrin city. The family members include Mustafa Mohamed Moho (65 years old), his wife Farida (60 years old), their grandson Farin Waleed Mustafa Moho (12 years old), their son Mohamed (23 years old), and his wife Fidan Abdul Rahman Mustafa (18 years old). The report stated that the family had been detained for over twenty days since returning from Aleppo to their village.
