Arbitrary Detention of Kurdish Citizens by Turkish-Backed Forces in Afrin

afrinpost-Exclusive

On December 19, Turkish intelligence, in collaboration with the military police, carried out the unwarranted arrest of Sheikh Saeed Sheikh Ismail Zada and Najlaa Hannan Sheikh Ismail Zada, a Kurdish man and woman, respectively. Sheikh Saeed resides in Afrin city, while Najlaa resides in Zaytunaka village within the Sharan district. The circumstances surrounding their detention remain unclear.

It is noteworthy that Najlaa’s brother-in-law, Abdul Karim Younes, a Tunisian national, is a prominent figure in the “Jaish al-Nukhba” militia, formerly associated with the Islamic State (ISIS). Younes controls the village of Zaytunaka, where the arrests took place.

Additionally, the fate of another Zaytunaka resident, Shekho Jameel Haj Ahmad Zada, abducted on September 29, 2023, by an armed group while traveling from Afrin to his village, remains unknown. His abandoned car was discovered near the irrigation canal close to the village of Gamrouk. Noting that Sheikho is a civil engineer, he had worked for the Bulbul Local Council but left his position a year ago.
