Illegal Sales of Homes Continue in Afrin, Kurds Forced to Pay High Sums

afrinpost-Exclusive

The illicit sale of homes and properties belonging to the native Kurdish population of Afrin, seized by armed groups and their relatives (IDPs), continues. These IDPs demand significant sums of money in exchange for relinquishing the properties and returning them to their rightful owners in the occupied city of Afrin.

In one case, Kurdish citizen Hassan Ali from the village of Jalla in the Rajo sub-district was compelled to pay $1,500 to an IDP from southern Aleppo countryside who had taken possession of his home in the Old City of Afrin. The IDP argued that this amount was compensation for renovation and repairs he claimed to have carried out in the house, despite having stolen the water tank, bathroom boiler, and other household items before returning it.

Similarly, a member of the Sultan Murad militia sold the home of citizen Adham Mahmoud from the village of Jwaiq in the central district, located near Sheikh Shawah Mosque in the Old City of Afrin, to one of his relatives from the Homs countryside for $1,400.
