The Turkish-affiliated political security militia has recently released a citizen named “Ali Hamdan,” an Arab resident of Afrin, after he paid a fine of $300.
On June 13, a patrol from the political security detained Ali, a 20-year-old citizen, from his home in Al-Ashrafieh neighborhood in Afrin city immediately upon his return from Aleppo. He was held captive for a week until his release on June 20, following the payment of the imposed fine.
This incident represents yet another behavior of the Turkish authorities to tighten their grip on citizens and extort money from individuals coming from areas under the control of the Syrian regime and the Syrian Democratic Forces.
Earlier on June 1, another citizen named “Abdo Nasser,” a 28-year-old Arab resident of Afrin, was released after paying a fine of $600. Abdo had been displaced to Raqqa city, and upon his return to Afrin, he was arrested by the military police militia and remained imprisoned for approximately 40 days.
