Turkish-backed SNA factions in Afrin have escalated their campaign of arrests, targeting returning civilians, including prominent figures, on various pretexts. According to our correspondent, on December 12, the Military Police detained Mahmoud Hussein Mustafa, 47, from Baadina town, and Ali Rifat Nouri, 38, from Jindires. Both were apprehended in Afrin’s Ashrafieh neighborhood.
The same day, the militia arrested three other individuals in Jindires under accusations of previous ties to the Autonomous Administration. They are Fouad Mohammed Mohammed, 56, Ahmad Hajj Ali, 45, and Firas al-Hussein, 39. These arrests followed the victims’ return from displacement in northern rural Aleppo, caused by Turkish-backed forces’ offensive on Tel Rifaat, Deir Jamal, Shahba, and parts of Sherawa earlier this month.
Additionally, the Political Division of the Military Police detained lawyer Hussein Mohammed al-Nuaimi, 47, from Tiranda village, south of Afrin, without providing any justification.
The detentions reflect ongoing harassment and repression by Turkish-backed militias, targeting Kurdish civilians who attempt to return to their homes or are accused of former affiliations with the Autonomous Administration. Observers and rights organizations continue to call for immediate action to halt these violations and ensure the safety and rights of civilians in Afrin.
