In a disturbing incident, elderly Kurdish villager Farid Hesso Abu Suleiman was brutally assaulted by a group of IDPs and armed individuals in the Mobata district of Afrin. The attack left Fred with a fractured right arm and severe bleeding.
According to our sources, the assault took place on April 4th when Farid, accompanied by his son Muhammad, went to their field in the village of Kurkan\ Gewrika. Upon arrival, they discovered two IDPs tending their livestock in the field. Farid politely asked the IDPs to remove the animals from the area.
As Farid and his son were busy working in the field, they noticed the livestock grazing from young olive trees. Farid voiced his concern, but one of the herders verbally abused him, even threatening Farid with a knife and throwing stones, which resulted in injuries to Farid’s left hand.
The herders then left for a nearby vineyard, hurling insults as they departed. Meanwhile, Muhammad, who was plowing the field with a tractor, arrived at the far end of the field. Farid once again approached the herders, asking them to leave to avoid further escalation, but they responded with more insults and threats, claiming they would bring armed reinforcements from a nearby military outpost.
Moments later, as Muhammad attempted to turn the tractor around, the IDPs returned with armed individuals from the outpost and began assaulting him with sticks and punches. Farid, witnessing the brutal attack on his son, pleaded with the assailants to stop, fearing for his son’s life.
The situation quickly escalated as the attackers turned their violence towards Farid, severely injuring his right arm as he attempted to protect his son. Despite Farid’s cries for help, the assault continued until his brother arrived with others and rushed them both to the hospital.
This egregious incident goes beyond mere harassment, as the attackers demonstrated a clear intent to cause harm, even resorting to brandishing weapons and inflicting severe physical harm. Farid is currently in stable condition, with injuries requiring medical attention, while Muhammad’s condition is also stable, thankfully without any head injuries.
This attack is just one example of the ongoing violence and harassment faced by Kurdish villagers in Afrin at the hands of IDPs and armed groups. Despite the severity of such incidents, many victims hesitate to report them, and those who do often find their complaints ignored.
