Minor Girl Found Dead in Afrin Raises Questions Amidst Silence from Turkish Authorities

The local community in Afrin was shaken yesterday as the body of a minor girl was discovered in the cellar of a house under construction in the vicinity of Midanky village, rural Afrin. Authorities from the Civil Defense organization were notified and promptly dispatched a team to the site. The girl’s body was retrieved and buried following clearance by militias affiliated with the Military Police, as per an announcement made by the organization on Facebook.

Private sources reported to afrinpost that the deceased girl, aged 12, belonged to the Mawali tribe. She was allegedly stabbed and burnt under mysterious circumstances. The Turkish forces have maintained a veil of secrecy surrounding the incident, fueling speculation, including unconfirmed reports suggesting a possible honor killing.

In a separate incident on the night of Newroz, March 20th, the body of 34-year-old Haitham Jameel Ahmed, a resident of Jalber village in the Sherawa district, was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head in his residence located near Azadi Square in central occupied Afrin. The discovery came three days after his death, under puzzling circumstances. Initial reports circulated labeling the incident as a suicide. Haitham, known for his profession as a barber, had returned to Afrin from Germany approximately four months prior to his demise. Turkish authorities have yet to issue any clarifications regarding the incident.

This comes amid persistent efforts by Turkish intelligence to suppress transparency in investigations and avoid holding perpetrators accountable for crimes committed since the occupation of the Afrin region. Additionally, they exert pressure on victims’ families, coercing them to provide false information under threat of violence, aiming to distort public opinion and conceal crimes perpetrated under their direct supervision.
