Horrific Custodial Death: Young Man Ibrahim Karbo Tortured to Death in Azaz

afrinpost-Exclusive

Ibrahim Walid Karbo, a young man from the occupied city of Azaz, was killed on January 28th, having endured continuous torture for four months within one of the prisons controlled by the Turkish-affiliated Military Police militia.

According to our correspondent, Ibrahim was fatally subjected to electric shocks by members of the Military Police militia. They falsely claimed he suffered a sudden heart attack leading to his death, attempting to evade responsibility.

Close sources to the victim informed afrinpost that Ibrahim was arrested on the pretext of missing a trial session four months ago. They confirmed he received no notification to attend and was not wanted on any charges. He had not appeared before any court during his unjust imprisonment, enduring torture without cause for four months.

The correspondent clarified that Ibrahim’s family demanded a forensic examination of the body to reveal the cause of death, accusing the Military Police militia of his murder—a claim vehemently rejected by the militia.

Torture in Occupation Prisons

The military and civilian police militias, along with militias affiliated with the Turkish-backed “Syrian National Army”, engage in various forms of violations against prisoners, including extortion, torture, and humiliation within dozens of prisons established in the occupied areas of northern and eastern Aleppo.

These prisons house hundreds of civilians, including men, women, the elderly, and even minors. Most were arbitrarily arrested and abducted on fabricated charges for the purpose of intimidation and financial extortion. In these facilities, they suffer physical and psychological torture, resulting in the loss of many lives and the deaths of detainees under torture.

As an example, on December 1, 2023, a young man from the village of Al-Barqoum in southern Aleppo committed suicide by throwing himself from the guard tower in the “Sultan Murad” militia’s prison in Harbul Kalas, near occupied Afrin. This tragic act followed severe torture inflicted by one of the militia leaders, Ali Yarmouk, over a month, in an attempt to extract confessions related to an alleged crime. However, the young man refused to confess to a crime he did not commit.

In another instance, on September 12, 2023, a citizen named Ali was killed after enduring severe torture by the Military Police militia in the occupied city of Jarablus for four days. The militia aimed to extract confessions, threatening Ali’s family with murder if they leaked his images to the media.

Moreover, on August 17, 2023, the Military Police militia, transported the body of IDP Hazem Mohsen Tafilia to the military hospital in Afrin, displaying signs of torture. The supervising doctor was coerced to diagnose the death as a heart attack under stringent security measures.

On the morning of December 22, 2022, lawyer Luqman Hannan, aged 45, from the village of Haj Qasim in the Mobata district, succumbed to injuries sustained from physical and psychological torture within the military hospital in the occupied city of Afrin. This followed his abduction by the “Ahrar al-Sharqiya” militia and Turkish intelligence just a day before.
