Turkish-backed militias have found various means to impose levies under different pretexts, seeking to collect funds while simultaneously plundering and oppressing the original residents of Afrin.
Our correspondent in Afrin said that most of the armed militia checkpoints in the occupied countryside of Afrin levy financial “support for Gaza” fees. These fees can range from ten Turkish liras and more for passing vehicles.
Additionally, these militias persist in imposing levies under the guise of “protection” or “crop safeguarding” to exploit as much of the olive harvest as possible. They also require financial and in-kind levies from Kurdish farmers in olive presses and crop yields. Local residents are often unable to prevent or resist these attacks.
Furthermore, an IDP from the city of Azaz has sold a shop belonging to Arab resident Ali Al-Hussein, located on the Jindires road in the occupied city of Afrin, to an IDP originally from the Ghouta region for the sum of $4,000. The new owner has since turned the property into a butcher shop.
