Militants Searching for Artifacts in Afrin, Amid Ongoing Archaeological Destruction

afrinpost – Exclusive

Sources exclusively informed “afrinpost” that around nine armed individuals, riding in three military vehicles, were conducting a search on the morning of August 28th in Tel Tawil, which is situated along the road near the village of Tal Tawil, in the outskirts of the occupied city of Afrin. Their search was focused on discovering archaeological artifacts.

The sources added that members of the group led by “Abu Arab,” affiliated with the “Sultan Murad” militia, had conducted digging activities approximately a month ago in Tel Al-Zaydiyah, an area of dense trees on the outskirts of Afrin. Rumors spread about their discovery of gold fragments in the vicinity.

It’s worth mentioning that militants from the “Sultan Murad” militia engaged in destructive digging activities in a mound situated between the villages of Jumkeh and Qaratapa in the central area of Afrin on June 25th, 2023. They were reportedly in search of hidden treasures and archaeological pieces.

Afrin’s Directorate of Antiquities also reported on its official Facebook account that Tel Al-Bir, located in the village of Sheikhorzeh in the Bulbul subdistrict, had been subjected to excavation, destruction, and the removal of all its archaeological layers, including valuable artifacts. This has caused a complete disruption of the mound’s historical stratigraphy, alongside the uprooting of olive trees surrounding the mound, particularly in its southern corner.
