A group of armed and masked assailants attacked an elderly Kurdish couple in their home in the village of Kurê/Al-Saghira in the Bulbul sub-district of occupied Afrin on the night of May 6th, brutally beating them and stealing their savings.
The armed group stormed the home of 70-year-old citizen Fawzi Khalil Habash, also known as Abu Salam, and beat him with the butts of their weapons before locking him and his deaf wife in a room, threatening them not to make any noise. The group then stole $400, 1500 Turkish lira, two mobile phones, and three gas cylinders.
The beating left Habash with bruises on his face and a blow to the head.
The village of Kurê is under the control of the Turkish-supported “Sultan Murad” group, and led by two leaders known as Abu al-Nasr and Abu Said.
The attacks on elderly Kurds and the theft of their money and livelihoods by Ankara-backed SNA fighters have increased amid the security vacuum and absence of law and accountability, with armed groups terrorizing innocent Kurdish civilians.
On April 21, 2023, a group of armed robbers stole from 75-year-old Mahmoud Hussein Abu Wahid, a resident of the village of Mezin in the Sherawa sub-district, tying him and his wife and taking their personal funds.
On April 10, 2023, unidentified armed assailants threatened an 80-year-old Kurdish woman named Zainab Saydo Sulaiman, while she was sitting in front of her home in the occupied city of Jindires, stealing gold jewelry from her hands and fleeing.
This incident highlights the continued violence and terror inflicted upon Kurdish communities in the occupied territories by Ankara-backed militia fighters.
