On Monday, March 6th, the Secretary-General of the Union of Muslim Scholars, Ali Muhiuddin Al-Qurra Daghi, visited the devastated city of Jindires accompanied by Osama al-Rifai, who goes by the title of the Grand Mufti of Syria, and a representative from the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs.
While the stated purpose of the visit holds no practical value, it holds significant implications given that it targeted a militarily occupied area whose people were forcibly displaced, and where various violations have been committed against its original Kurdish inhabitants, including the latest racist behaviors, neglect of Kurdish citizens affected by the earthquake, and the theft of relief aid at gunpoint.
In reality, the primary objective of the visit is to beautify the occupation and Turkey’s policy and to attempt to penetrate the Kurdish region by the Muslim Brotherhood organization. Prior to entering Jindires, Al-Qurra Daghi pointed out the existence of “an official and national Islamic government that is fulfilling its duty” and praised the Turkish government.
Who is Al-Qurra Daghi?
Al-Qurra Daghi is Ali Mohiuddin Al-Qurra Daghi, who hails from the town of Qaradagh in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the Kurdistan region. He is one of the pillars of the Muslim Brotherhood organization and holds the position of Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, which was founded by Qatar in 2004 following a declaration by Yusuf al-Qaradawi, to be the channel for promoting political Islam.
Al-Qurra Daghi is described as “Al-Qaradawi’s man and Doha’s ambassador for spreading extremism.” He is a Qatari national and his media office is run by one of Al Jazeera’s media personnel. He is constantly on the move between Doha and Istanbul, which is considered his main headquarters.
Al-Qurra Daghi is also known for his close relationship with extremist religious figures listed on the international terrorism lists, including Hamed al-Ali and Abdul Rahman bin Umayr al-Nuaimi from Kuwait.
The International Union of Muslim Scholars has taken on the task of legitimizing Doha’s intervention in political issues in the region from the perspective of the Muslim Brotherhood organization, and promoting the term “the inherited caliphate,” which is intended to revive the Ottoman heritage and the ideas of the Indian Islamic scholar “Abul A’la Maududi.” Al-Qurra Daghi defended Turkey and its Ottoman history, saying: “It was the demons who caused the Islamic nation to fall in the 1920s under the guise of nationalism and they brought down the Ottoman Caliphate, which was the unifier of Muslims and their protector for more than five centuries. Now, the descendants of those demons are working to thwart any Islamic movements or popular uprisings to abort any project that brings Muslims together once again.”
Thus, Al-Qurra Daghi is following in the footsteps of Sayyid Qutb, adopting the idea of “the nation” at the expense of national and patriotic affiliations, and is known for his saying: “The homeland is nothing but a handful of rotten soil.”
As a confirmation of his affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Qurra Daghi chaired the Union’s conference held in Istanbul on 24/9/2013, following the overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt, to discuss what was described as “the world after the coup against the will of the people.”
Al-Qurra Daghi mission is to facilitate the Muslim Brotherhood’s penetration into society and Kurdish regions in Iraq and Syria in service of Ankara’s policy. In this context, the appointment of three Kurdish members to the International Union of Muslim Scholars was made, to give the impression of embracing the Kurds and to facilitate the entry of the Muslim Brotherhood into Kurdish areas.
