Armed members of the Turkish-affiliated Al-Amshat militia attacked a Kurdish citizen returning from a sit-in protest in Jindires town on Saturday. The protest was in response to the Jaish al-Sharqiya’s recent massacre of the Kurdish Peshmerga family for lighting the Newroz flame.
According to a private source from the town of Şiyê/Sheikh l-Hadid, the security checkpoint of the Suleiman Shah\ Al-Amshat Brigade in the Daffa Yul area stopped and beat the young man, Mohammed Abd Heddo, 30, for carrying a Kurdish flag.
Imams from the mosques in the town of Şiyê called on locals through loudspeakers to participate in the sit-in protest in Jindires, ordered by the Al-Amshat militia, to show solidarity with the families of the four martyrs and retaliate against Jaish al-Sharqiya. However, on the fourth day of the sit-in on March 25, 2023, the militia intensified its patrols at the town’s exits and began harassing the locals.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the remaining Kurds and militia groups in the Afrin region, where violence and human rights violations have been rampant. The situation calls for urgent international attention and action to protect the rights and safety of all individuals in the region.
