HTS withdraws from Jindires amidst ongoing protests

Dozens of families of the victims of Newroz night massacre, along with residents of Jindires, visited today the graves of the martyrs at the Tall cemetery. The Kurdish National Council had just announced the end of a three-day protest against the killings, which were committed by militias affiliated with the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army.

Despite this announcement, a group of Kurdish youth continued their sit-in protest until the present day. Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, which had been protecting the Kurdish protesters, withdrew its forces during the sit-in, and militants of Ahrar al-Sharqiya returned to their headquarters in the city.

Media channels affiliated with the National Army, recently posted calls on social media to hold counter-activities next Sunday, urging people not to raise any flag other than the “revolution flag” in the occupied areas of northern Syria. This is believed to be in response to the Kurdish flag that was raised by the Kurdish protesters during the mourning period and the protest in front of the house of the four victims.

Turkish intelligence is now working to form a delegation of local leaders to meet with a senior Turkish official, likely the governor of Hatay, who will visit Jindires to discuss possible solutions to the aftermath of the Newroz massacre.
