55 Trees Cut Down and Disputes over Seized Lands Erupt in Afrin

Last week, a group of armed individuals unlawfully felled approximately 55 trees in the occupied countryside of Afrin. Additionally, there was a dispute among IDPs loyal to Turkey, regarding agricultural land they had seized, resulting in a physical altercation.

According to our reporter in Afrin, a group of armed individuals targeted a field near the village of Qurtqlaq in the Shera/Sharan sub-district, cutting down 45 olive trees and two walnut trees that belonged to a local resident named Ahmed Osso. The attackers also felled eight almond trees between the villages of Qesm and Dike in the Rajo sub-district, which belonged to a citizen named Rashid Shekho.

On February 26, 2023, a dispute over agricultural land near the Ashuna dam in the Rajo sub-district led to a physical altercation among internally displaced persons (IDPs) loyal to Turkey and the militias there. The altercation escalated into gunfire; no injuries were reported

On February 27, 2023, two militants belonging to the Turkeish-affiliated “Ahrar al-Sharqiya” militia, reportedly fired shots from Kalashnikov rifles at a 63-year-old Kurdish citizen named Mustafa Bilal. The incident occurred in the Rajo sub-district of Afrin’s countryside, where the victim was objecting and attempting to stop the militants from cutting down his trees.
